DEIL Research and Human Subjects Approval Committee
The DEIL Research and Human Subjects Approval Committee reviews research proposals that involve
human subjects in order to ensure that the proposed research complies
with campus policies governing the ethical treatment of research
subjects. More information about the procedure for requesting human
subjects approval and the necessary forms are available through
the DEIL human subjects approval information
page.
The DEIL Research and Human Subjects Approval Committee does not grant permission for researchers
to recruit students enrolled in ESL classes. Researchers who have
obtained human subjects approval for a project (from DEIL, campus
IRB, or College of Education) must contact the relevant supervisors
directly. More information about procedures and contact information
for requesting permission to recruit students enrolled in various
ESL classes is available through the ESL
program information page.
There is a new requirement instituted by the UIUC Institutional Research Board for any research proposals submitted to the IRB or to any departmental research boards. This includes research submitted for exemption to the DEIL Research and Human Subjects Approval Committee. All students and faculty who submit research proposals must include proof that you have completed two training modules. In order to complete this training, go to the IRB website: http://www.irb.uiuc.edu
Click on the Education button at the left. Then, under the Education tab, click on "Instructions for IRB Training Modules." There are two training modules you need to complete. The first is from the IRB. Be sure you save an electronic copy of your certificate of completion of the program. The second module is from the CITI web site. Be sure you save a copy of your completion report.
A copy of both the IRB certificate of completion and the CITI completion report need to be submitted with all proposals submitted to any campus research committee, including the UIUC IRB and the DEIL Research and Human Subjects Approval Committee.
