The Division of English as an International Language (DEIL) at the University of Illinois (UIUC) began as a program focusing on the teaching of English to students from other language backgrounds in 1947. It marked its golden (i.e., 50th) anniversary in 1997. In addition, DEIL's MATESL graduate degree program is one of the oldest programs in the United States, having celebrated its 30th anniversary in 1995. As one of the larger graduate programs on the UIUC campus, DEIL has a distinguished tradition of offering both domestic and international students an opportunity to be involved in academic study and research into various facets of the teaching and learning of English as a second, a foreign, or an international language.
